Matt,

I have many of the same memories of him. One somber one is from the day Dave
Fredericksen passed. We were sitting in his RV chatting about a presentation
I was putting together. Dave was lying in Hospice care at the time and the
conversation turned to life and death and friendship. Later that night
around 2300, Steve and I were talking to a kid from ASU who was new to
astronomy and had ventured out to see what it was about. We were chatting
when a bright (I mean BRIGHT) Meteor went by from east to west. It lit up
the field and cast shadows, even AJ wouldn't have missed it. I learned the
next day after getting home that Dave had passed around 2300 that night. I
still say that was Dave saying good bye. I bet they are up there now
comparing how things look from the other side.

Observing just will not be the same without him.

Paul,
Agreed, I think it's a great idea to rename the place in his name- "Coe
Field" perhaps, to also reflect his love of baseball. He spent many full
weeks and sometimes longer parked at the "east" end of the observing field
near the small hill. Many days and nights I would set up next to him,
enjoying the place, the skies there, and the camaraderie. We always had a
great time, and he observed with a near-ecstasy that was infectious. I
particularly liked to follow his observing list for the evening- he'd call
out the object and we would then share views between our telescopes.
Timeless memories.

We need to rename the Antennas observing site after Steve.  He found
the place, loved it, popularized it, and probably spent more time
there than anyone.  I'm not good at naming stuff, so maybe someone
could offer suggestions?

Fellow friends of Steve,
It is my sad duty to inform you that Steve Coe has died. I was
contacted early this morning with this information by the Yavapai
County Sheriff's office via Glendale PD. Unfortunately he had serious
health issues that did not resolve in a positive manner. At this time,
I have little more information, but will share as appropriate. I am
stunned and will miss him dearly. Clear Skies, my friend.
