One of the few advantages of being really old like me is having the memory of several truly great comets, most of which will never return. (The youngsters will have their own great comets to remember.) As a 15 year old in Illinois in 1957 I was treated to two great comets, Mrkos and Arend-Roland. The latter developed a zero-magnitude nucleus and hung over my parents garage in the evening. I remember getting a picture of it. When I was about twice as old and newly married in Lombard, Illinois, I recall waking up early and staring out the window at a remarkable object. It was comet West, and I was seeing it from my bed! In 1986 comet Haley came by. It was pretty good from Arizona, and it was photogenic, but it wasn't dazzling. Recently, in spring of '97, we'll all remember the incredible showing of comet Hale-Bopp. I have a nice color shot taken with my 8 inch astrograph, and I must post it sometime. - Paul Lind (and no wise cracks about me seeing Haley's comet in 1911) -- See message header for info on list archives or unsubscribing, and please send personal replies to the author, not the list.
