There was no further action this week on the electronic billboard bill (SB 1138) and the Arizona House and Senate have adjourned until Monday morning, June 16th. The budget bills (HB 2531-HB 2535) were transmitted from the House to the Governor this morning. While the Governor considers her disposition on these bills over the next number of working days, the Senate is left with more time on its hands. Extra vigilance is therefore needed during this period. As it stands, there are still eight very late introduction bills in play, and at least four bills, including SB 1138, that have been dormant for over a month but that could still be acted upon. As to SB 1138 specifically, it still appears to be dead for the session. It should be noted, however, that a number of uncommitted or apparently uncommitted Senators have been totally involved in the budget process and and would not previously grant meetings on the bill. There is always the possibility that the billboard lobby will now make another run at these senators. Even though those votes alone would not be enough to pass the bill, any moves in this direction will be monitored. One thing that weighs in our favor is that many of the senators have long expected the session to be over and have made other plans. Consequently, on most days now there are at least one or two pro-billboard senators absent, which makes it even more difficult for the billboard lobby to round up the 16 necessary votes all at the same time. -- See message header for info on list archives or unsubscribing, and please send personal replies to the author, not the list.
