Seth Shostak is also giving the weekly colloquium of the School of Earth and Space Exploration on Wednesday afternoon, September 30 at 4:10pm in Physical Sciences F Wing room 173 (PSF 173). The title is: "New Approaches to the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence". This is open to the public, and you can even get a free snack outside the room in the first floor lobby of PSF beginning about 3:45pm. If you want to attend, you might consider the light rail to avoid the serious daytime parking issues at ASU. Don't tempt the neo-nazi ASU parking police! Find a visitor lot and pay up, or you may find your car booted or towed. Seth is a radio astronomer with a PhD from Caltech and has been with Frank Drake and Jill Tarter at the SETI Institute since its early days. He is an engaging speaker who represents SETI well and is often in the public media (including Larry King). He has a new and fun book out, "Confessions of an Alien Hunter". It gives some history and rationale for SETI. While SETI is controversial and clearly the longest of long shots, a detection would be of the greatest importance. The technology available has advanced beyond anyone's wildest dreams, and he is going to talk about some of the new approaches at the Wednesday colloquium.
