Good heavens, Brian...you don't need to do that.  In fact, if you would, please 
refrain from doing that.  I think the way you name your files is helpful, and 
is in no way a hinderance to anyone consuming them.  The arbitrary extensions 
are only a problem for those who use Windows at such a high level as to not 
recognize that an unregistered file type does not automatically mean that the 
file is inaccessible.  Don't bend.  Do what works for you.  That's my opinion.

     Sorry.  The file extensions aren't related to anything since they are
straight flat ASCII text.  Since they are just personal mnemonics,
I'll change the file names to "___.dat".
