Good heavens, Brian...you don't need to do that. In fact, if you would, please refrain from doing that. I think the way you name your files is helpful, and is in no way a hinderance to anyone consuming them. The arbitrary extensions are only a problem for those who use Windows at such a high level as to not recognize that an unregistered file type does not automatically mean that the file is inaccessible. Don't bend. Do what works for you. That's my opinion.
