I installed a second isolated battery in my truck that charges as I drive. I 
wrote an article for Astronomy Technology Today on my setup in the 
September/October 2012 issue. I will see if I can post a link to the article.

I would think that carrying a generator around just to power a laptop is gross 
overkill.  That decision should be made based on actual need...and only the 
truly power hungry should need a generator.

While my power needs in the field vary from trip to trip, I have been using a 
100W solar panel/30A charge controller for over a year with excellent results.  
The "coach" battery in my Westfalia is a 120 AH AGM unit.   Both that battery 
and my 22 AH Werker AGM (astronomy equipment servant) get tied together for 
re-charge.  In full sun following a day/night's usage cycle, the charge 
controller usually kicks into idle mode by early afternoon.
