I recorded the eclipse and occultation you mentioned last night from about 00:47 am till almost 01:00 am. Io started out eclipsing the smaller Europa, and then transitioned into an occultation that lasted almost 12 minutes. My recording started over 15 minutes before the event, and ran until 15 minutes after the event. The moons are clearly separated 15 minute out, but were difficult to distinguish as distinctly separate within about 6 minutes before/after the event. I used a 2x barlow with a low-light video camera on my f/10 SCT. The light from Europa being blocked by Io last night resulted in a predicted drop of 0.8 magnitude in brightness. This was not readily visible to me on the monitor, but I plan to digitize the recording and produce a graph of the event showing the light drop. There are 32 events in the next couple months of one of Jupiters moons occulting or eclipsing another one. Some of these result in a magnitude drop of 0 (!), but one of the better ones is on August 21 starting about 03:35 am, +/- 1.5 minutes, when Io eclipses Europa with a resulting magnitude drop of 0.8. This event is predicted to last a little over 15 minutes. More at http://www.hristopavlov.net/SatWatcher/2009-8-21-10-42-44-Io(I)_Europa(II).html The largest magnitude drop of the 32 predicted events is on September 30 starting about 00:05 am, +/- 48 seconds. Io will eclipse Europa again. It is predicted to drop over 1 magnitude, which may be visible visually. The duration of this event is a bit over 8 minutes. Benson, AZ 85602 hm ph: 520-586-2244 Hi Tom, I watched the Alcyone occultation this morning after having observed Jupiter for a couple hours. I started the evening literally trying to find a good location on my property to look at Saturn with its edge-on rings. I finally found a decent spot, but by that time Saturn was very low. I could see the flattened ball of the planet, no rings, but the moon Titan was seen. I then spent some time looking at a few double stars, most notably, Izar in Bootes, nu Scorpii, Antares, and epsilon Lyrae, all fully resolved, with very good seeing, though it was very humid and lots of lightning activity to the southeast. I then watched Jupiter with the Great Red Spot followed very closely by a smaller, red barge that I think will collide with the GRS very soon. The NEB showed lots of detail with a few large white ovals indenting it on the north edge. As I observed the GRS I noticed that two of Jupiter's moons were approaching each other. Their relative movement was surprisingly fast and if th ere was an eclipse or transit I missed it, but I saw the moons nearly meld into one another. All that while, I kept watching for the impact area, but I could not see it. Has it faded out or was there too much moisture building up on my optics that I didn't realize? The humidity is at monsoon levels in Arizona, adding a bit of undesirable haze to the scene, but it's clear. Here is a grab with my Canon 20D through a TV101. 1/2 second at ISO 200 showed the Earthshine and stars best, but unfortunately also showed the haze. http://members.cox.net/tpolakis/astro/IMG_9081.jpg The moon is moving roughly right to left in this scene. Electra has just emerged, and Alcyone is about to be covered.
