Today I received an e-mail from Orion with an interesting ad: their new line of open truss dobsonians. I had to click on the web link to see the scopes - 36" for $55,600, 40" for $80,000, and a 50" for $123,000. The ad says "The premium optics and light-gathering of telescopes found in observatories and universities are now brought to your home by Orion." At those prices, if I brought one of those babies home, I couldn't afford to make my house payment! Realistically, in this economy or any economy, how many of these scopes does Orion expect to sell to the average amateur astronomer? It will take a club or an organization to afford these or is Orion going into the telescope mortgage business. I was expecting an extension of the SkyQuest line perhaps up to 20" but this is well beyond that. I'm amazed and wondering what are they thinking? Maybe they only have to sell one a year to make a profit. Cary -- See message header for info on list archives or unsubscribing, and please send personal replies to the author, not the list.
