This is simply amazing…. At least to me.
A 200mm lens on a DSLR, and a total of 3 10sec exposures.
And it is NOT his first one….
And it appears to be confirmed, including a spectrogram.
I surely hope that I am not the only one who is “impressed”…..
Not sure about the technique, but it doesn't seem
too outrageous. The nova is fairly red from both
interstellar reddening and the strong H-alpha emission line,
so the star would show up in the red channel of the
detector more easily. That probably gives him a bit
of leverage in the detection. As an experienced observer
and imager, I'm sure Nishimura's technique is very good
as regards flat-fielding, other calibrations, and software.
The three exposures were possibly slightly dithered,
which allows false images from hot pixels and other
problems to be avoided.
I guess the suggestion would be to try picking up
this object yourself and see how it goes!
