The Horsehead is such a funny object. The best I ever saw it was at Flatiron observing site when the seeing and transparency were fair at best (20" scope, 180X with a UHC filter). Other times at a dark site and steady skys, I couldn't see it at all. Actually, the Horsehead is easy to see, it's just all that glowing stuff around it that is hard.
