Something obvious here because of the strong color-contrast
that I've never noticed before is that the dark lane to the
lower-left in the image (northeast on the sky) is filled-in
with blue stuff, surely hot stars in star-forming regions.
I think this means this is a leading edge of one of the spiral
arms of the galaxy. I looked briefly in the literature regarding
the rotation, but wasn't able to parse out which way was "up"
in the plots of velocities (both professional and amateur
astronomers are guilty of not indicating orientations).
If my guess if right, then the lower velocities should appear
toward the NE ansa of the galaxy.
