Jim,
My guess is they are part of the spiral arms that have been disturbed by
interacting with another galaxy.

Bernard,
What are the bluish colored regions around NFC’s 4438? I also see another nice
galaxy in the background pointed to by the tip of the upturned bluish region.
Superb image detail! Thank you for the interesting back story on interaction as
well.

Hi,
This is an image of NGC 4438 and NGC 4435, also known as the Eyes
Galaxies or Arp 120. These galaxies are about 52 million light years
away in the constellation Virgo. This pair of galaxies is part of a
chain of galaxies known as Markarian's Chain. It was originally
thought these galaxies were interacting, but they have different red
shifts which indicate they are far apart and likely to be a line of
sight galaxy pair. Also, NGC 4425 show no sign of tidal effects as it
should if it were interacting with NGC 4438. It is believed NGC 4438
is a pair of almost merged galaxies or is being disturbed by other members of
Markarian's chain.
Comments and suggestions appreciated.
