These are two images of NGC 2442, also known as the Meathook Galaxy. It is a
spiral galaxy about 50 million light years away in the constellation Volans.
The first image is a wider FOV that includes NGC 2434, PGC21457, PGC100030,
PGC279613, and PGC21406. You can see the other galaxies by mousing over the
image. The other is a closeup crop of NGC 2442. The distorted structure of
the central bar is thought to be the result of a past interaction with
PGC21457.
