Sorry for not replying right away. We went to see Gordon Lightfoot this
evening. Man! He’s getting old. Unlike the rest of us!
Everyone should feel free to chime in with whatever astro related posting
they’d like to share. Actually, this thread was started by Bernard so
technically it’s his thread. It’s just wondered a bit off from the original
topic.
I don’t know, is mixing reflectors and refractors allowed? :-) Seems like cats
vs dogs, Pepsi vs Coke, … :-) I’ve always been in the reflector camp mainly
because I could get more inches of aperture for my limited budget.
My current rig is a second hand Celestron AVX with C6 SCT (thanks Albert!), a
ZWO ASI1600mm pro mono camera with a filter wheel, a 80mm finder scope with a
Starshooter guide camera, and my new Celestron Focus Motor for SCT and HD or
something. I use APT (https://ideiki.com/astro/Default.aspx) as my capture SW
and PixInsight (https://pixinsight.com/) for image processing. Before I got the
ZWO, I was using my unmodified Canon with BackyardEOS
(https://www.otelescope.com/store/category/2-backyardeos/). I liked BYEOS but
my camera was hitting 45C during my captures last June. The thermal noise was
swamping the signal. If you look at my M13 image from last 6/11, you can see
how bad it can get during summer nights around here. That’s when I decided to
upgrade to the cooled ZWO. I also want to try some narrow band imaging when I
get a bit more experience. I’m glad I didn’t skimp on the camera.
I’m planning on coming to the AAMM. I hope to be there soon after lunch on
Friday. I’ve got a tent and air mattress this time! Yippee! I’ll be driving my
wife’s cherry red Ford Explorer. I’ll be the guy standing in the back at the
gatherings. I talk A LOT MORE here than I do in person! Oh! I’m 6’5”, 275 lbs,
with a beard. So I’m usually easy to spot.
I’m looking forward to meeting everyone! And I’m praying for decent weather!

Hi Mike
My name is Jim Sellers (EVAC member since Jan 2018). I am a newbie as far as
Astro photography and would like to join your discussion if you don’t mind.
I too admire Bernard’s images and that’s what inspires me to try to get the
best possible images I can from my roughly ~$5k investment in equipment.
Celestron AVX mount, 9.25” Celestron OTA, Canon T7i dslr and Explore
Scientific ED127mm cf refractor. My biggest change at the moment is learning
to auto guide my AVX mount to enable longer image exposures of DSO’S.
I am recently retired and can now invest in much more time pursuing this fun
hobby from my light polluted backyard sky in Chandler. I am planning to
attend the Messier Marathon this month. If your going maybe we’ll get a
chance to meet and share some of our experiences.
Jim
