Since we have a clear evening, there's no excuse not to step outside and see Mira getting close to an historic maximum. I'm making it about mag. 2.1 or even 2.0, but very close now in brightness to alpha Arietis. The AAVSO lightcurve, which goes back "only" to 1858, shows a few maxima as bright as 1.8 or 1.9. There was an extraordinary maximum in 1779 when it got up to mag 1.2, nearly as bright as Aldebaran. Jeff Hopkins is getting reliable calibrated photometry, right?
