Kind of along those lines--It is really best to approach these matters as just a general average constituent--not as some specialized minority of star huggers. It's best not to give the adversaries this argument of supporting something that's only going to benefit a few astronomy clubs in Arizona. -----Original Message----- From: EVAC_Prez [mailto:evac_prez@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Thursday, March 13, 2003 9:01 AM To: AZ-Observing Subject: [AZ-Observing] Re: - Mailing tip - Need help ASAP on SB1218!!! I would just like to add a word of caution about clubs sending letters on Club letterhead. The appropriateness, and even legality, of this approach is dependent upon the organization of the club. EVAC is an Arizona corporation and a non-profit in the eyes of the IRS, having an IRC 501(c)(3) exemption letter. There are laws that govern legislative and political activities for such organizations, and exposing the club to such infractions may not be prudent. Granted, the definitions of such activities may be gray, at best, and open to interpretation... but I see no reason to expose the club to the possibility of legal repercussions. Having said that, I fully support SB1218 and have already written to my legislators personally. I have encouraged all members to do likewise. I certainly plan to watch the votes, and will remember who voted for/against this bill when it is my turn to vote!
