I agree, I have tried to use the Polaris region, but too often the
northern part of the sky is in the light dome of some city. Not a
surprise when we head south of the cities (Tucson or Phoenix) towards
the border to get a good southern sky. This is very true at Vekol,
TIMPA and the Las Cienegas sites.

I too use a field near zenith. You just have to have some charts along
that have the needed info, the planetarium software package I use in my
palmtop computer can provide such at any time. I just pick a good
asterism near Zenith and try to find the dimmest star I can see. Then I
look it up on the Palm as it has some impact on my dark adaptation even
when red with a bit of red plastic in front.
