15480 Empire Rd. Benson, AZ 85602 hm ph: 520-586-2244 Well, the weather in SoAZ wasn't too bad either. After a breezy day in Benson it was a calm, clear, and steady night, though it was a bit chilly. The temp at 4:30am was 42 deg F with a little dew forming on everything. Although there was supposed to be some sky brightening because of atmospheric skyglow the gegenschein was obvious in Pisces. The galaxies in Pegasus, Andromeda and Pisces were great but the highlight of the evening had to be Comet Hergenrother in the NE corner of the square of Pegasus. It is fairly bright at around magn 9 and has an elongated fan tail with a slightly brighter compact inner coma. Around midnight last night the comet passed about 5 arcseconds from a brighter star (~magn 8) and made for a beautiful sight. It was fun watching the gradual increase in distance between the two as time went on. The tail was about 7 arcminutes long. The HAC club in Sierra Vista has their annual autumn picnic to celebrate their 30th anniversary tonight (Saturday). I'll probably be there tonight to enjoy the cameradie, food, and night-time viewing. So, come on out and let's have the more the merrier.
