As an example of the state of astronomy funding
priorities, I copy the announcement below about
the Kitt Peak 84-inch, which historically has been
the most productive telescope on the mountain.
Refurbishing the telescope and providing it
with one or more modern instruments will be
expensive --- one might take the aperture in
meters, 2.1m, to be a ballpark figure for the
up-front cost in dollars (i.e. 2.1 million) to bring
this 50-year-old telescope into the 21st century.
