As an example of the state of astronomy funding priorities, I copy the announcement below about the Kitt Peak 84-inch, which historically has been the most productive telescope on the mountain. Refurbishing the telescope and providing it with one or more modern instruments will be expensive --- one might take the aperture in meters, 2.1m, to be a ballpark figure for the up-front cost in dollars (i.e. 2.1 million) to bring this 50-year-old telescope into the 21st century. \Brian ============= NOAO announces an extension in the deadline for submission of proposals to operate the 2.1m telescope on Kitt Peak. The original call had a deadline of July 7, 2014. The revised call (attached) has a deadline of August 1, 2014 for Letters of Intent, and October 1, 2014 for full proposals. Interested parties are strongly encouraged to discuss their interest with Dr. Lori Allen before submitting a letter or proposal. Complete information on the due dates can be found on page 1 of the attached call. -- See message header for info on list archives or unsubscribing, and please send personal replies to the author, not the list.
