hm ph: 520-586-2244 Very nice image of Jupiter, Tom. I'm glad to see your dire
prediction a month ago of good seeing going away has not come true (at least so
far!). The seeing has been about as good as it gets here for the past few days
and details on the moon have been great. I've even been able to resolve a few
sub-arcsecond stars, though 0.5 arcsec seems to be the wall. I have been seeing
fabulous detail on Jupiter's surface lately (see my other emails); the Great
(not so) Red Spot complex has been intriguing. Even though your image doesn't
show it well, visually the GRS complex looks like a three-ring circus: three
ovals of different aspect ratio all colliding with each other - at least that's
how my eye interprets the activity of the complex. Additionally you can see
gradations in the color of the broad tannish-colored SEB seeming like streamers
coming off the GRS. The barges shown in your image are very prominent in the
much thinner, brownish NEB and are mahogany-colored; the one barge looks like a
kidney bean. I also clearly see the disks of the moons and some ill-defined
albedo features on Ganymede. While I was out looking at Jupiter, I thought I
would try for Uranus and Neptune. Uranus' disk was especially nice, though I
detected no surface detail. It's just a little smaller than (about 2/3 the
size) Mars' current disk size of 6 arcsec, believe it or not, but several
magnitudes fainter. I was able to see Uranus naked eye north of a parallelogram
asterism of 5th magnitude stars 27, 29, 30, and 33 Piscium using them as a
pointer. Uranus formed a wide "double star" with a 6th magn star and you could
clearly see the elongation of the pair. Neptune was a bit more difficult though
I was able to see its disk using about 200x. Right now it is located about 5
degrees northeast of the star delta Capricorni, using the triangle of stars
iota, 38, and 42 Aquarii to pinpoint it. I was able to see Neptune's brightest
moon, Triton, about 15 arcsec north proceeding (I think) it. I used both my
13-in and 25-in Dobs with manual pointing and no clock drive for all my
observations. It has been very humid here in So AZ so the transparency has been
good but not great. The temperatures have been getting to dew point so that
everything is soaked by the time I go back inside. I have been having a bad
time with my eyepieces dewing up. I still have to get some sort of anti-dewing
system. Has anybody tried the Kendrick system or is there something better? I
may have to bring out the hair dryer tonight!
Clear skies,
Wayne (aka Mr. Galaxy)

Hi Tom,

I'm thankful to see that someone captured an image from last night. I was late
getting out there and had about 15 min to observe. I noted the Jupiter was
exceptional (seeing not to steady though) and the great red spot was very
prominent but didn't have time to set up for imaging. You image is excellent
and it detail allowed me to fill in some of the blanks at to what I was seeing
visually.

Thank you,

Jimmy Ray

The Great Red Spot was on the central meridian conveniently at around 9:30
tonight. Seeing has been very good for a long time. Here is my image of
Jupiter through the 10-inch.
