See this URL (below) for full details on the bright "January Surprise" Comet McNaught C/2006 P1, which is appearing low in the WSW near sunset. According to the chart on the S&T web pages, the comet can be found about halfway between Venus and the compass West point on the horizon. John Bortle, noted comet authority and observer in Stormville, NY, estimated it to be about 2nd magnitude.
