Rick,
Thanks for sleuthing a suspect. GOES 1 is the best explanation I've seen. The
coordinates you chose are very close. Here, are the GPS coordinates for the
Doney Mtn Picnic Area (Wupatki) from my Etrex: N31.53 W111.40.

The track does run a bit south of where I first picked up the object but,
given the uncertainty in my position/motion estimates and the probability that
slight misalignment of the polar axis was influencing the tracking, GOES 1
moves
to the top of the suspect list.

Regards,

Bill

Bill,

I love a good mystery in the morning. I think I've found your "rougue"
GEOsat. What I did was to dowmnload the latest elements of Geosat from
www.celestrak.com, entered them int o Skymap Pro v9and ran a pass prediction. I
estimated
your position as N35.57 W 111.40, set the time and then ran the prediction.
Problem was too many sattelites to check kept locking up Skymap. I then Figured
I'd make a few guesses (Skymap will either predict one selected sat or all in
the list.) The second one I picked (I thought I'd start with ones whoses names
I've heard of) was GOES 1 (sms-c). The pass seemed to be pretty close to what
yuo described. Maybe a bit farther off, but the elements were a bit old (
guess they don't upudate them as ofeten as others). I've attached a jpeg of the
Skymap screen for you to compare. let me know if yoou think this is what you
saw.
