I can only chalk up my success in driving on I-17 to clean living. In the last 100 trips toward or to Flagstaff on I-17, I have slowed to a speed below 50 mph twice. My experience with driving to observing sites since I moved to Arizona in 1985 has been that it is far easier to get to a dark site today. Folks with selective memory may forget the deathtrap that was two-lane Maricopa Road to Vekol. They may also forget hopping completely off of I-10 westbound at the Black Canyon Freeway to take McDowell through the hoods of Phoenix and pick up I-10 at 59th Avenue. As for sky brightness, yes, it's worse, but the southern sky from Table Mesa in 1986 was far worse than the southern sky from Cherry Road today. If you want to attack the problem of light pollution, follow somebody like Howard Israel's lead, and become active in the IDA.
