I can only chalk up my success in driving on I-17 to clean living. In the
last 100 trips toward or to Flagstaff on I-17, I have slowed to a speed
below 50 mph twice. My experience with driving to observing sites since I
moved to Arizona in 1985 has been that it is far easier to get to a dark
site today. Folks with selective memory may forget the deathtrap that was
two-lane Maricopa Road to Vekol. They may also forget hopping completely
off of I-10 westbound at the Black Canyon Freeway to take McDowell through
the hoods of Phoenix and pick up I-10 at 59th Avenue.

As for sky brightness, yes, it's worse, but the southern sky from Table
Mesa in 1986 was far worse than the southern sky from Cherry Road today.
If you want to attack the problem of light pollution, follow somebody like
Howard Israel's lead, and become active in the IDA. What's the value of
preaching (well, actually just complaining) to the choir on this list?

Fortunately, I joined the EVAC star party at the Boyce Thompson Arboretum,
an okay site about 45 minutes east of my house in Tempe. A dozen or so
telescopes were set up, and we had some good views all around until nearly
moonrise.
