The setting circle people were GOTO wannabes who were just ahead of
their time. (-;

Should setting circles also be disqualified? If so, then I would suggest
that the Dobsonian telescope is the driver behind this attitude, and
this is a step backward. Looking through some of my 1960-1963 S&T's,
nearly all telescopes for sale had German Equatorial mounts, and it
looks like most had setting circles. It is also my recollection of that
period of time that this is the kind of telescope an amateur wanted and
preferred. Usually, the only reason they did not have one is because a
cheaper telescope with lesser capabilities was more appropriate for a
child, or because of financial constraints. However, I do not believe in
the early 60's that the amateur community hold out as a goal 'star
hopping' and using other other methods to find an object in lieu of
using setting circles. Now, because of the advent of the Dobsonian, we
seem to have what appears to be a retrogression, namely that it seems to
be more desirable to have to hunt and search for an object rather than
finding it more easily with setting circles. The same might be able to
be said about GOTO capabilities
