Tom (Mozdzen), I agree with you. The Messier Marathon is a test of star- hopping ability and one's knowledge of the sky - find, identify and if you're really quick observe. GOTO scopes are a totally legitimate means of observing, as are digital and manual circles, etc. There are numerous observing awards for the M-objects, H400, ... , through the AL and clubs for which "electronic finders" are completely legitimate. (If I am not mistaken, however, the Herschel II objects list of the AL (sponsored by the Portland, OR club, I think) distinguishes on the certificate whether manual or electronic).
