That's correct. Rose City Astronomers adds M or DA to the HII award certificate to distinguish. Conceivably, you could do it both ways and have bragging rights for that. :-) (Who will be the first?) The Astronomical League's Messier Award stipulates it can only be done manually. since its purpose is to get you to initially learn the sky. The Messier Marathon will prob never restrict any way of doing the marathon as long as you observe each object thru the eyepiece(s).
