Alvarez has also worked extensively on = plate tectonics and geomagnetic reversals, doing research in the = Mediterranean, North Africa, Central Asia and South America. He has a = passion for "Big History," the emerging interdisciplinary field that = aims to tie everything in our planet's past, from its cosmic ancestry, = through geological evolution, to the pageant of human societies. Alvarez = is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, and an honorary citizen = of two Italian towns. He will deliver his lecture as recipient of the = 2008 Eugene Shoemaker Memorial Award. =20 =20 Eugene Shoemaker was a pioneer of the science of cosmic impacts. He did = extensive work at Meteor Crater in northern Arizona, and helped train = lunar astronauts. He served terms as Chief Scientist at the US = Geological Survey's Center of Astrogeology near Flagstaff, and as = Professor of Geology at Caltech. Together with his wife and collaborator = Carolyn Shoemaker, Gene scoured the skies for asteroids, and toured the = Earth for concealed impact craters. It was on one such trip, to = Australia in 1997, that he was tragically killed. In a unique gesture, = NASA sent Gene's ashes to the moon.
