What about? I have observed here several times. The major drawback is that
its very close to 87. There are a few campers from time to time.

I responded that I knew that location, and have used it several times. It is
among my favorites, and it is/was a good one, with some conditions.
Among those, I said that we COULD NOT use the meadow. I think Tom did an
excellent job of explaining why (the 300' rule). I had left that out.
I indicated that the NE corner of the meadow, both sides of the road, had some
established campsite areas... and they are good to use.
BUT.... I did not mention how many could fit. I think probably 3-4 setups on
the NE side of the road, and about the same on the W side, all in the NE corner
area.
And AGAIN... I would urge a CAUTION. There are several deep "ruts" in the road
getting there.
The location is less than a mile N of the highway. Anyway, if these "ruts" have
"standing water".... then they are PROBABLY "SINK HOLES".
I have personal experience with my motorhome, trying to get free of them.
Luckily, I always bring the JEEP. Yup, the JEEP can pull it free !!!
Did I mention that there is usually a good number of ELK in the area ? Love to
listen to them, and really enjoy watching them from that site...

mirror casting trip to Tucson.

And Tom, your excellent imagery of Fredericksen's Meadow and the limiting lines
is helpful. It appears a SMALL party could still set up at the north tip of the
meadow, but probably no more than 5 or 6 astronomers?

At the meeting Friday, I mentioned a possible location I recalled while on a
geocaching trip. The spot is near an abandoned ranch house called T-Bar Ranch,
just east of Apache Maid Mountain. The ranch house itself is an archeological
site, but there is a large meadow to its west. The site appears to be easily
accessible from I-17 off the Stoneman Lake Road exit (about 10 miles). The
Coordinates of the meadow are: N34 43.775 W111 31.900.
Google maps shows the ranch house just to the South east, the road to the site
passes it. The meadow is fairly large, extending up to a spot on the map called
Sue's tank.
I've made a few pdf's of the Garmin topo maps, One a route map from I-17, the
other a close up of the site. I'll send them to al who have responded to the
thread and anyone else who wants one (let me know off list).
It May well be worth a recon trip, I'd certainly be willing to go up and take a
looksee.

I am planning on going to the ranger station to get some answers on Monday.
The sketchy info that Don spoke at the meeting was that we could not go out
onto the meadow at all. I do not know if that rule has been in place always or
if it is a brand new rule.
