Excerpt from IAU Circular 8793 issued this evening: J. N. Marcus writes that forward-scattering brightness enhancement should peak in C/2006 P1, as viewed from the earth, on Jan. 14 at a level approximately 2.3 magnitudes brighter than what would be predicted by a standard power law (model details in Marcus 2007, ICQ, submitted). This Circular also quotes a number of fairly experienced comet observers in re the total magnitude, which indicate that values around -3 are typical near Jan 11.0 - 11.5 UT. Since this isn't _so_ much fainter than Venus, it is certainly time to try looking for it at midday in much the same way one would observe Venus--- and of course itself is conveniently in the sky, too, at midday. \Brian -- See message header for info on list archives or unsubscribing, and please send personal replies to the author, not the list.
