Dan - In addition, the two favorite astro whines (full moon clearing and weekend clouding) are not supported by Brian's data. In fact, using the years 1980 thru 2004, Sat and Sunday had the highest number of clear nights, though not statistically different than any of the other days of the week. - Bernie -----Original Message----- From: az-observing-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:az-observing-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Tom Polakis Sent: Thursday, June 14, 2007 8:33 AM To: az-observing@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [AZ-Observing] Re: Flagstaff nighttime cloudiness/sky brightness ---- Dan Heim <dan@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote: > these days. It would be interesting to run this analysis using data for the Maricopa County area, where all of my cancellations happened. Dan, Since the weather mechanisms are the same (monsoon in Summer and south ends of passing troughs at other times), I think you would get the same result. I have not rigorously collected data, but I have not noticed a change in cloudiness since 1985. My two pet theories as to why it is common for people to claim that it's not as clear as it used to be are: 1 - As observers become more advanced, they also become more sensitive to what used to seem like harmless clouds. 2 - As people age, selective memory makes them reminisce about how good the good old days used to be.
