Great pictures. We were near El Centro driving toward San Diego. Gail was
driving and said: "what's that?" At first it looked like a plane towing a
bright banner. Then it became really spectacular (and high) as it fanned out.

I went to a favorite site behind South Mountain near the west end of Pecos
Road, soon to be paved over by the Loop 202. I set up two cameras, one with
a 35mm lens, and the other with a 70-200mm zoom. With the latter camera, I
began at 200mm, but reached the short end of the zoom as the plume expanded.
Most of the images are at ISO 1600, f/2.8 to f/4, and 1/2 to 4 second
exposures. A couple of the images in this gallery are animated GIFs with
slow frame rates, so give them a few seconds to load.
