Wouldn't it be sad if we were the last generation of astronomers to actually
see the stars from the continental US?  It may be coming to that,
unfortunately.  Progress in spite of ourselves...

Well, if the 6% number is close, then in another ten years, even in
Arizona, we'll have to convince ourselves that Bortle "Blue" or even
"Green/Yellow" skies are workable.    

Sort of like almost anywhere east of the Mississippi.

At least they're still able to do hard science on Kitt Peak.

Yeah, but consider that, on average, light pollution is increasing at a 
rate of 6% annually. Population is increasing at 1/4 that rate. Go
figure.
