I just looked on Canon's web site and see that the EOS Utility software
supports the Rebel XTi.
I used the remote capture / laptop view / focus adjust method to take photos
of the most recent transit of Mercury. The only thing that I can remember
even being close to a problem was trying to view the laptop screen in the
bright sunlight. But that was easily overcome with a dark towel...
