Tom Mozdzen, Bernie, Jenn, and I went to Picketpost, where we viewed the comet through my Pronto and 10-inch Newtonian. While the comet is currently bright, the tail actually put on a better show a month ago, when the comet was a magnitude fainter. The coma is still impressively large. Both the thin gas tail and orbital debris stream (or whatever it's called) could be seen, but neither were impressive even with 10 inches of aperture. I took a couple grab shots from the night. The first used a 50mm f/1.8 lens on the Digital Rebel riding on a tracking platform stopped down to 2.2 (not stopped down enough), and about 2 minutes of exposure at ISO 800. I was pleased to see the Merope nebula turning up. The second shot was taken with a 20mm lens. Bernie is caught in the act of blinding a pilot with his laser pointer. http://www.pbase.com/polakis/machholz_picket Tom -- See message header for info on list archives or unsubscribing, and please send personal replies to the author, not the list.
