Several items gleaned from the Comets Mailing List (http://groups.yahoo. com/group/comets-ml/): - Jose Pablo Navarro Pina of Spain used visual magnitude estimates to update the maximum brightness of the comet. It is running a little brighter than the original predictions. This means it should reach +3.4 in mid-January rather than +4.1. His extrapolation assumes the comet is going to behave itself. http://webs.ono.com/usr010/jpab/ - Recently discovered comet C/2004 V4 (NEAT) will be superposed on the coma of Comet Machholz on January 1. The minimum separation is 2.3' at 17h UT (10:00 a.m. MST). The bad news is that the fainter comet will be magnitude 17! - Don Machholz's Web site contains an illustrated personal account. You may have read this already, but it's good to see that he scanned his raw discovery notes, shown on the second page of this document: http://www.geocities.com/donmachholz/FullDiscoveryStory1.doc Tom -- See message header for info on list archives or unsubscribing, and please send personal replies to the author, not the list.
