Czech comet-watcher Jakub Cerny, shows Comet ISON fading as it approaches
the sun. The sun's disk is blocked by an occulting disk.
Comet ISON once touted as the "comet of the century" fizzled out on
Thursday during its final approach to the sun.
"It does seem that Comet ISON probably hasn't survived this journey," Karl
Battams, an astrophysicist at the Naval Research Laboratory, acknowledged at
the end of a NASA-sponsored Google+ Hangout that attracted more than 27,000
viewers at its peak.
Battams and other experts said that means nothing of the comet will ever be
seen again, dashing the hopes of millions who were looking forward to a
celestial Yuletide treat. Pictures from sun-watching satellites showed only
ISON's fading tail.
