That's fairly pathetic since a ten-second examination would assure the officers of its innocent nature (especially military officers who know what a mortar is). The great German poet and philosopher Friedrich Schiller had a saying: "Against such stupidity, the Gods themselves have no defense!" Actually that one would apply pretty well in 21st century America too. -----Original Message----- From: az-observing-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:az-observing-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Richard Harshaw Sent: Sunday, July 07, 2013 4:09 PM To: az-observing@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [AZ-Observing] Re: Cherry Road Tonight Eric, that actually happened to a friend of mine who was in Egypt on an astronomy tour. Her host set up an 18-inch Dob in the desert not too far from the Great Pyramid only to have the military arrest him for setting up a mortar. His friends had to argue for hours to secure his release! We'll join you if yes. I've sometimes thought setting up a big dob that someone's going to call the cops about a guy with a cannon.... maybe not an unreasonable worry! -----Original Message----- From: az-observing-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:az-observing-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Richard Harshaw Sent: Sunday, July 07, 2013 11:20 AM To: az-observing@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [AZ-Observing] Re: Cherry Road Tonight I had* a friend in Coppel, TX (a town just north of the DFW Airport) who had a Questar scope. Just after 9/11/01, he was setting up in the backyard. About dark, he got a loud knock at the gate and heard a voice said, "Open up, Police!" He opened the gate to find a policeman staring him in the face with his flashlight on full. Chuck said, "Something wrong?" The cop replied, "We got a call from a neighbor that said you were setting up a mortar. Since you are on the approach lane to DFW, I need to ask you some questions!" Chuck invited the cop over to his telescope and said, "This is probably what the neighbor saw" and invited the cop to look at a few night sky wonders. After 5 minutes, the officer apologized and thanked Chuck for the amazing views, then got back in his car and continued his beat. --------- * Chuck died last year, sorry to say.
