Steve, thanks for the update and your club membership. Turns out Dick Harshaw, myself and Steve Coe are trying to plan another trip to Fredericksen's Meadow. I'm in for Thursday and Friday nights but they may stay a bit longer. Join us if you can, would love to have you there. AJ: It was good seeing you on Friday. It was amazing that the wind which was blowing so steadily during the day died out and left use with a great observing night. Frederickson's meadow was beautiful as it always is. My 8 year old daughter Jamie and I did a couple of Geocache's (successful!!) during the day on Friday and my wife arrived later that evening. For the most part, memorial day campers weren't an issue at night with lights and fires. I was using Mallincam, a 12" F/4 Newtonian, and a G11. This was my first night using a new to me Orion Starshoot autoguider and it was easy to use and performed well. After you left on Saturday, my wife Suzanne, 8 year old daughter Jamie, and I drove to Flagstaff and hiked the lava tubes from end to end. On the way back, I overheard two truckers talking at the gas station and they said that I-40 eastbound had been shutdown due to high winds. When I got back to Frederickson's meadow, another observer named Terry had arrived. He said a Ranger had stopped by and told him to expect high winds, and gusts to 65 on Sunday. Terry, Steve Coe and I went out at twilight, but the winds were bad and Steve Coe invited us into his motorhome where we enjoyed good conversation typical when Steve is involved. After an hour or so, we went out to try the skies again, but winds were still bad, and Steve commented on the bad seeing due to the dust in the air. Terry had a nice, new side by side Explore Scientific refractor setup (ED 127??) on a new Atlas. He also had the 100 degree Explore Scientific eyepieces. Terry treated us to some nice views of Saturn with his new setup, but that was my observing evening due to the wind. Steve Coe and I decided to turn in and try again later that evening, so I set my alarm and got up at 1:00 but it was still blowing too hard. I never even turned my scope on Saturday evening. I talked with Terry the next morning, and he tried a couple of times during the evening but also gave up due to wind. Terry and I exchanged email addresses and we're going to try to meet up at some future dark sky sites. Terry packed up and left about 9:00 a.m. Sunday morning and we followed about an hour later. I never got a chance to say goodbye to Steve. The night before, he was thinking of going to an RV park in Verde Valley today because of the wind forcast, but I don't know if he did or not. There's no Internet access from Fredericksons Meadow so he said he hadn't been in email for a few days. Steve, as always, thanks for the tips and great conversation. It's alway a pleasure. Steve P.S. AJ, I'm SAC, not EVAC. :-) ________________________________ From: AJ Crayon <acrayon@xxxxxxx> To: az-observing@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Sat, May 28, 2011 5:21:14 PM Subject: [AZ-Observing] Re: Cherry Rd? I just got back from Fredericksen's Meadow. When I left at 9:30am this morning, per my plan, the wind was gusting to an estimated 20 or 30mph and it wasn't the FM type gusts. This wind was continuous not the cyclical kind from the meadow caused by its heating from sun. Steve Coe, myself and another gentleman, with a very nice Mellancam(?), from EVAC were there. There was a little breeze Thursday night and we have a 7/7 session. Friday night was much better, no wind and I called it an 8/8. This morning the wind was another story. Steve said on Friday, he would be there until Wednesday after Memorial Day and would decide then if the stay would be exteded. Unfortunately he doesn't have internet connection and if his plans change we will not know about it until he finds a location that will permit him to connect to the internet. If the usual DOTM crowd was going up anyway, I might come for the party and take my chances. But it sounds like most folks either are at the Meadow or plan to pass on this one. Better luck next month, I hope. I guess the :-/ icon is a wry smile? Got it. Actually, it turned out okay last night after the sun went down. The winds stopped (they were hitting 30 knots about 6:00 pm) and the sky was good, though not great. Today's forecast is for 40 knot gusts and even 30 knot gusts tonight. Sunday's transparency forecast degrades badly too.
