I arrived at the site about 5:00 PM with partly cloudy skies and found Ken
Reeves already there, set up and waiting for someone to arrive along with big
trailer parked well away from the site with the porch light on. I decided to
go regardless of the partly cloudy skies BECAUSE the scope needed to be used.
Set up my 8â SCT had a bite to eat with Ken and we chatted about goings on
until it go dark enough to start.
With the skies being like they were I hop scotched around Cygnus, Cassiopeia,
Perseus checked out M 31 and M 33. In addition wanted to find out best
observing position for objects in Sculptor. When attempts made the
constellation was either to low and far from the central meridian or clouded
out and closer to the CM.
On problem was some traffic on the road going to town, more than experienced in
past trips to BTH. Since the night wasnât very good for observing we decided
to call it quits around 9:30 PM. As the time approached traffic on the road
ceased when we were ready to leave the porch light went off! Hanging around
for an additional few minutes we noted the site was pretty dark despite the
skies.
I would rate the night a 6/6 or below average.
Right now I donât think to write off BTH, perhaps try some more and see what
develops; an hours drive for me is quite nice. We did talk about another site
on the east side called something like Massacre site or something like that.
It seems to be about an hours drive for me â tempting because Phoenix lights
are to the west instead of the southwest as in BTH.
