Dwight,
Bab Crist and I are going to Stoneman Lake road tonight. I'm leaving soon to
try to secure a spot.
* Take I-17 to Stoneman lake road, go East about 7 miles to "T" in the road.
Turn right.
* Go right about 1.5 or 1.7 miles just past road 622 (on your right). Soon
after cross a cattle guard.
* Soon after the cattle guard the site is on the right. It has a small
circular drive around a fire pit and an open area.
If the site is occupied by campers, Lynn Blackburn says: "Instead of turning
right into the site, there's a road going to the left and up a hill where there
are more sites.

I was wondering about the gravel pit off the Dugas Orme School exit. There is a
parking space used by off roaders during the daytime just east of the Gravel
pit we used to use years ago. Seems like to me would be a great place to go.
I've been wanting to check this place out for the last year and have not got
around to it.

I don't know if the roads west of 87 are closed but there is a Stage 2 Fire
Restriction currently in effect that impacts the forest. Not good news for
us.

Have they closed the access road to Frederickson's Meadow? I know a lot of
forest roads east of 87 are closed.

w is a better weather choice this time of year.
As for Stoneman, my Dodge Caravan (both my old one and my new one) did/does
not have an off road package. So on my first trip to Stoneman, first my
Caravan, then my trailer, dropped into a very deep rut going into the
observing site. My trailer jack hit a rock and got bent back about 30-40
degrees. I have a replacement now.
My second trip to Stoneman (again in my old Caravan), I was getting ready to
leave when I found about a 4" square hole in the sidewall of my left front
tire. Obviously I had hit something very sharp and very jagged right at the
end of getting into the observing site. Fortunately I had a spare on my old
Caravan. My new Caravan, however, does not have a spare. If I got a flat in
my new car, I would be SOL.
To my mind, Stoneman has several other problems, so I really have no
interest in going there again.
So finally, my vote for summer viewing goes to Frederickson's Meadow.
Let me what y'all think.
