Steve (and other AZ-Observing List Readers...)

I am the one who posted the announcement. The site selection was not without
forethought and research.
I am wondering if we know of the same location ?? I know.... You use the
site often and for long lengths of time.
First, and I must emphasize... the move to a new location is a must. If
Hovatter does not work, then the alternative is to cancel the event. It is
that simple.

I went out and surveyed the site, following the site recommendation from
several SAC members who where familiar with it, and who were familiar with
the dilemma of finding a new site. I have taken a series of images of the
area that I was at. The lowest number image starts around the area of the
dirt road, looking east. I then did a slow 360 of the area. The images are
here: http://az-douglass.net/sachovatter/

My impression of the area was that it was of sufficient size to handle the
event. Others have agreed, including those that pointed to it and suggested
it for the event. Additionally, the "announcement" was not made (and thus
the final selection of the site) until EVAC and SAC leadership had
consultated with each other, including the SAC board. Thus, this process was
not done "in a vacuum".

Unless each "camper" or "observer" wants a home size lot.... Am I missing
something ??

As an aside, hope you enjoying the cool of Oregon. It is darn hot here right
now.

Subject: [AZ-Observing] All-Az Star Party in Nov. at Antennas

Howdy folks;

There was an announcement on Cloudy Nights about the Nov. All-Az Star
Party run by EVAC. They are planning to try it at the Antennas site. I
posted the response below on Cloudy Nights and I wanted to put it here as
well.

"I found this site five years ago and we have had good luck with it. The
largest crowd we have had is about 20 vehicles and it got a little crowded
with that. I just don't know if there is enough room for more than 30
vehicles or so.

There is an overflow area on further down the road, maybe 500 yards or so,
but it would only handle 15 or 20 vehicles. So many other places are not
usable because the birm is too high for most of the vehicles we travel in.

It might be helpful to get some kind of count of how many people are
planning to show up. If that number starts to approach 50 it would be
difficult to get them all into the Antennas location.

I promise I am not trying to talk you out of it, I just want you to know
what you are getting into.

Gene Lucas has mentioned an old RV park that is off of an exit before
Hovatter Road, I think it was Sore Finger Road, but my memory is not that
good. That type of set up might be better, there might be restrooms and
water....I have never checked it out."

If there are any other ideas, I just wanted to give folks a chance to
speak up. If we can fit the star party at Antennas, that would be fine.

I hope this helps;
Steve Coe
