Pam, I agree, and it appears the same for Marriage and Family Therapists. I can only speak for my knowledge relating to Michigan LPCs; but it is my impression that these individuals would be completely out of their depth in trying to treat VA patients of prototypic "complex" status we see so often. The education and training requirements (at least for LMFT) are so vague you can drive a truck through them without hitting anything substantive about psychopathology: http://www.aamft.org/about/coamfte/Version%2011%20Standards/Master_Version_11_Accreditation_Standards.pdf I don't understand why APA is always attributing what we need to do in Accreditation to satisfy what sounds like the Department of Education's iron-fisted micro management when the DOE lets something like this document meet their requirements. Oh well, I know that our friends at APA Accreditation must have darn good reasons. Be all this as it may, the qual standards for these professions now well and truly exist. However, it may sort of like when we received that directive saying that podiatrists could be a VA patient's primary care physician. Theoretically possible, but not likely to happen often.
