Let me add my appreciation to Rod's long term efforts to chronicle VA
Psychology's important history in the course of American healthcare. I also
acknowledge, as did Walter, Bob Goldberg's relentless pursuit to capture in
pictures vital events of importance to the next cohort of psychologists and
psychology leaders in VA.

Echoing what Robert Goldberg has already phrased so well in his praise of all
that Rod Baker has accomplished...the archives by Baker are documents that not
only account for others in the VA have done for veterans but they likewise
inspire us all to do more.

Let me add that, for several years, I’ve been learning from Rod how not to
drop that baton. I still wonder at how he has accomplished all that he has
done. You cannot imagine how much involvement, tenacity, energy, attention to
detail, and – dare I say it? - love for the organization that Rod has put into
his efforts. Without him, much that is valuable about the VA, its heritage,
its people would have been lost. He has made an invaluable contribution to
us as VA psychologists and scholar-historians of our profession and science.

Glad you liked it and appreciated the kind words of the historical work for VA
psychology I’ve done,
I’m trying to get the free pdf file to as many as I can that would like a copy.
Could you please mention it on one of your psychology conference calls? All
that they have to do is e-mail a request to me at

from them which insures I have a good e-mail address to forward the file to
them.
Since they will also get the same e-mail you received they can print out the
free pdf file themselves if they wish as well as consider avoiding the
hassle/costs of doing their own printing by buying the more professionally
bound book (containing the pdf file) I self-published through CreateSpace. That
information also appears in the e-mail I sent you and others below that I will
be forwarding to them. Many of those who bought the book like the professional
look of the book with many adding that they like the laminated paperback with
the book’s front and back cover featuring a display of about a dozen of the
photos inside asking the reader if they knew the person(s) in the picture. A
hint is provided as well as the page number in the book where they can find the
person(s) name.
Finally, I’m talking with Jeff Burk about getting file into the archive section
of the AVAPL Newsletter so hopefully all of its members will have access to the
pdf file.

My last VA psychology history project before I turned my historian role over to
Bob Goldberg was to compile a collection of scanned photos of VACO and VA
Psychology Chief/Leaders from 1946 to 2005 that I had acquired over the years.
These scanned photos are being submitted to the VA psychology archives at The
Center for the History of Psychology, Archives of the History of American
Psychology at The University of Akron.
So that many of you can enjoy the same pleasant memories I had of these VA
psychology leaders who helped our profession and improved the care of veterans
over the years, I am attaching a 48 page pdf file for you that contains screen
prints of those images (about 170 of them, including some candid shots from APA
conventions, etc.) They can be easily viewed on your computer screen or, if you
wish and have a color inkjet printer, you can print out any of the pages if you
want to keep a hard copy.
If you do want to print out some pages, let me give you some recommendations.
Since all of the scanned photos are either grayscale or color prints, they do
not display well when printed on a black and white printer. I can also tell you
from many years of printing photos that the paper you use in your printer is
crucial for the best images. Any office supply store (Office Max, Office Depot,
etc.) sells color inkjet paper of a better quality than the usual color inkjet
paper sold. These papers are sometimes called presentation matte paper and work
well (you do not need glossy or semigloss photo paper.) The presentation matte
papers have a coated surface for color prints and, although they generally are
a heavier paper (27-30#?), you will be pleased with the difference. (As a
reminder, all color inkjet printers allow you to determine the type of
paper/grade you are printing with and that grade paper should be selected
before printing.) If you transfer the attached pdf file to a memory stick or
put it on a CD, the same office supply stores will also print the file for you
on good paper. This can get expensive, however, with color printing costing 50
cents or more per page, an important consideration if you want to print out the
entire 48 page file.
In talking with others, I have been asked to create an inexpensive alternative
by self-publishing a paperback book that can be ordered online for those who do
not want the trouble to print the file themselves. I have decided to use
CreateSpace for this (an Amazon.com<http://amazon.com/> company…and one I’ve
used before that does good work) and the book can be ordered online for $10
plus S/H. The book is 8x10 inches in size, is professionally bound, and has a
color laminated paperback cover in addition to the 48 pages in the file I am
