I did a similar deal to cover payroll and insurance and the agency
(Ambit) charged the client $6/hour I think. But this was way back (in
2002!) so the number is probably meaningless. I did this for the
initial 3-month contract because time was very short and this was the
simple solution.BTW the client paid the $6 to the agency on top of my
agreed rate.
When the contract was extended I set up a company and took out PI and
PL insurance. The client paid my company directly and the additional
(to me) few dollars per hour more than covered my accounting and
insurance costs for the first year.
Why not shop around... your client may have a preferred
recruiter/agency. Get quotes from them and another couple of agencies
and go with the one you like the best.

I recently switched to Bookssorted (https://www.bookssorted.com.au), who
are in Canberra but provide payroll services nationally, and have been
extremely happy with them. Their basic charge is 1.75% and I now get my pay
deposited regularly once a fortnight (even though my services are only paid
monthly). They are an extremely friendly group of people and the manager
was very helpful in answering all my questions but didn't try any 'hard
sell'. Check out their FAQ page on the website to see all their services or
give them a call as I did. (They also have a Facebook page - of course!)
They also pay a referral fee for getting them a new customer, so let me
know if you do choose them! However, I certainly wouldn't recommend them
just for that reason - I'm genuinely very pleased I switched - so be sure
to check out whether they suit you.

I'm with Howard -- or rather, I'm with Bookssorted, too, and have been for
almost every job for nearly a decade.
Highly recommended -- although they don't get into shielding you from the
brunt of payroll tax, and you need to look elsewhere for that if you want
it. (Not that hard).
