I think there's some truth in that, but there's also a huge danger of
treating readers as being unfeeling and infallible, which of course is way
way off! 

We need to treat readers with respect (for example by writing from their
point of view rather than that of the subject matter experts). Otherwise, we
alienate readers and they become much less likely to successfully follow the
instructions. 

And of course enabling readers to succeed is what the job's all about.
