I knew there was something I had to check...

From the Macquarie dictionary:
"epopt
"Sorry. We could not find "epopt"."

From dictionary.com:
"Epopt
Ep"opt\, n. [Gr. ? one initiated into the Eleusinian mysteries.] One instructed
in the mysteries of a secret system. --Carlyle."

Perhaps some instructors have found that a full day of hard work only leads to
greater understanding and retention, whereas a light, fun course with an early
finish yields a better rating in the post-course evaluation.

I don't really see this. Perhaps 'disfluency' would help when memorising a
speech or a long list of items, because the different colours and fonts give
your memory another hook to latch onto. For comprehension and retention? Effort
spent deciphering means less attention available for comprehending. It's like
saying that it's better to look through a really dirty window, because you're
forced to peer carefully to make out the view. Good technical writing should be
perfectly transparent.

And I don't pretend to know what an 'epopt' is, but it sounds impressive ;^)

Thanks for the thoughtful post, Neil.
