Thanks John,
Close, but it's the label for one part of the initial definition I'm looking
for: step 1b in this list:
1. A relatively senior user creates a custom field.
Doing so includes:
a. Giving it a name, e.g. "Faculty"
b. Choosing what it will be available for use on (e.g. "SPEAKER", meaning
Speakers' records)
c. Selecting the type of field (e.g. text field)
d. Configuring aspects of that field.
Options available depend on the field type selected.
Examples:
i. Field
length if it's a simple text field.
ii. Values
for a series of checkboxes or radio buttons.
2. That custom field is then available on the usual screen on which users
maintain (in this example) speakers' records.
This is in addition to all the standard fields, such as their contact info,
bio, etc.
3. Regular users can therefore enter or select values for that field when
adding or editing a speaker's record.
Example: Nick is in the "Confused Communication" faculty.
So getting back to your suggestion, thanks, but no: a "value" is what would be
added in step 3, which is an instance of a custom field on a particular record.
It's part of the higher level definition of the custom field that I'm looking
to label.
Thanks,
Nick

Nick, I'm going to stick my neck out here and guess.
In context, is your user filling out a set of definitions which then turn into
(say) actions on a generated menu? That's sort of how it reads to me.
If that's correct, then could the thing that will be displayed to the final
user be described as a "value"?

Hi Aus Techies
Can anyone help me find an alternative to the technical noun "Object" for
non-technical users of an app?
A screen has several labels using "Type" with different qualifiers.
