Thank you for your contributions. As you may have guessed, the 'subdocuments' are automatically generated and so there's no question of reformatting them. However, the styles were the key. What I did was import the subdocument styles into the main document. Then I noticed something else: the subdocuments' heading styles in their native state had no numbering. The heading paras had the styles applied, and numbering applied on top. So after importing the styles into the main document, I modified them by adding numbering.


Now I can includetext the RTF subdocuments.and the numbering works fine despite everything.

As to relative / absolute paths, the problem was that sometimes the includetext field wouldn't work with a relative path (which in my case is just a file name, because everything is in the same directory). A bit more research and careful reading of some MVP articles reveals that Word can be a bit erratic when determining the base location for relative paths. Research continues...
