I have a master document, but I use word 2007 in compatibility mode only. I use the master to compile a set of 12 documents into a single help file. The last document is an index of the other 11. The total number of pages is about 1400, with individual documents ranging from 20 to 260 pages. Works well. I'm more worried about the maintenance of the thing, which might end up being done by anybody. Keeping the Contents, Figures and Tables lists accurate is probably my main concern at the moment, along with accurate cross references. Maybe I should get that article sorted out... Not huge, but big enough to warrant using master doc, I think. Do you? I am interested to know this too. Sonja - what page count/file size are you anticipating for your manual? -----Original Message----- From: austechwriter-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:austechwriter-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of McShane, Sonja A Sent: Wednesday, 27 April 2011 10:18 AM To: austechwriter@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: atw: Re: Replacing Word (Long...) Hi all, Re: 'Has anyone done a substantial manual as a master doc in Word 2007 and lived to tell the tale?' I am very, *very* interested to hear success (or otherwise) stories as well. I'm going to try using master doc in a few weeks and would love to know what I'm in for! What you say is generally true but master docs might be an exception. An article in a reasonably reliable newsletter claims that MS 'rewrote the whole codebase' for Word 2007. I posted the following to a few TW lists last year but haven't heard that anyone has tried it out: 'According to this article, MS fixed the master document feature in Word 2007 and it now works. It's the first I've heard of it. http://news.office-watch.com/t/n.aspx?articleid=1396&zoneid=12 "Don't be afraid - Word's Master Documents is stable and worth using. Eventually Microsoft listened and rewrote the whole codebase to make it work safely. However memories of master document disasters still linger and Office-Watch.com is often asked if the feature is now safe. The answer is yes..." Has anyone done a substantial manual as a master doc in Word 2007 and lived to tell the tale?'
