The speed issue with 2007 is not general - my system sped up.

You can put macros on a toolbar - I've just tested - in fact it is very easy
to do. There is a new feature in 2007 - the Quick Access Toolbar, that is
the equivalent of creating your own toolbar. It stays visible no matter
what ribbon tab you have selected and it is easy to put almost any command
onto it.

My main issues with 2007 are the bug with bullets and numbering and not
being able to get styles I use all the time onto the Quick Access Toolbar -
please let me know how if anyone discovers the trick. Curiously they have
provided this function for H1, H2, H3 and list bullet - but nothing else.

The inbuilt list bullets and numbering are a nightmare...

SEQ fields are stable, but fiddly.

I've been using the inbuilt outline bullets and numbering and have found
them to be quite stable - but I haven't used them as intensively as I
had previously attempted the list bullets and numbering.

As for 2007 - having installed and uninstalled it a number of times,
I've gone back to 2003, partially because it slows my computer down to a
crawl, partially because I've been too busy to work out how it works,
and partially because apparently I can't put my macros onto buttons, and
I use them all the time!

Ah, this is interesting, Elizabeth.

Are you saying that the inbuilt bullets and numbering are stable when
set up
correctly, or that your workaround using SEQ fields is stable? Or both?

If the former, I must be out of date - which is quite possible.

I am finding myself telling people this little tale, so if it is not
correct, I need to find out.

I am telling people that those horrid little bullets and numbering boxes
that drive us to distraction are resident on the individual machines -
certainly I believed that to be the case eons ago - and that is the
reason
bullets corrupt from one machine to another. I can have the styles all
nicely set up to look for defined "boxes" on my machine, only to find
that
those "boxes" are not in the right place on someone else's machine.

Am I hopelessly out of date?

However, I concede that many of you are much more technically clever
than I,
so I look forward to you telling me what workaround you devise for the
problem in 2007 - it's even more "entertaining" than previous versions
and I
await the solution with bated breath. Meanwhile I have a hugely complex
and
labour intensive workaround that does seem to be working.

But it requires prayer. If I criticise 2007 in any way and hurt it's
feelings, it will punish me.

Christine

This may not help you at this stage, but before the outline numbering
came out (which I have found to be very stable, btw), I used to create
indented styles for numbering, then use SEQ fields for the numbering
itself.

SEQ fields are very stable and do exactly what you tell them to do (so
if they behave strangely it's because you told them to do something
strange).

For each numbering sequence you create a sequence name, and then you
(usually only) need three types of that field: "Restart at 1", "Repeat
previous number" and "Next number in the sequence".

When working with a team, I created a "cheat sheet" with a bunch of
different number sequences that they could copy and paste. (Having
explained how it works to them, too.)

So if have a numbering system like:

1.
1.1
1.1.1

you would call the first number "Level1", and on your cheat sheet you
would have three fields for that sequence, one to restart at 1, one to
repeat the previous number, and one to progress the sequence. Then you
would have a new sequence for each level in the outline. And you can
format them to be alpha, arabic or roman.

This system is a bit manual, and you may need to do some thinking to get
it right, but once you have it in place, it won't break!

Hi Amanda,

I think the secret to having stable Word documents is having a uniquely
named template (definitey not Normal) with uniquely named styles (that
have
different names to the defaults e.g. 'list n1' instead of 'list 1').
Don't
use any of the default styles.

Also in Tools>Options>Edit turn off "Keep track of formatting" and turn
on
"Prompt to update style". This means you can make changes to the style
within the text of the document, then click in the style field in the
toolbar (if it's there). Either type in a new style name and hit Enter
and
you've made a new style, or just hit enter with the cursor on an
existing
style name and you'll be asked if you want to update the style to match
recent changes.

Funnily enough, I find Frame to be very counter-intuitive.

Cheers,
Terry

This I have done, thanks :)

I'll do more research. I'm used to documenting online help in HTML and
user
manuals in Frame. I'm not a Word person and find it
very...counter-intuitive
when it comes to templates.

Why can't they just behave like a CSS??? ;)

Thanks again!
Amanda
